Solidarity March with Standing Rock

In Misc. by neah

Yesterday, unreported by most media outlets, the front line camp of the No DAPL movement was raided by militarized police and the National Guard. Around the world, people watched as Water and Land Protectors stood in peace and prayer against these violent state forces. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and other Indigenous leadership are blocking the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) through their sacred land. If built, the risk of an oil spill from the pipeline is high. And when such a spill occurs, water will be permanently contaminated, causing devastating harm to ecosystems and all life.

The No DAPL movement is a fight against modern day colonization of Native lands. The hxstory of colonization and genocide against Indigenous people in this country is long and violent. The Dakota Access Pipeline shows us that this hxstory is not yet over. Native people are still being ignored, oppressed, and criminalized by the U.S. government. And unless WE stand up and fight back, we are complicit in that oppression.

Please join us this Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the weekly Peace Vigil (corner of Cornwall and Magnolia) for a solidarity peaceful march through the streets of Bellingham to raise awareness for this issue. March begins at 5 p.m.
